You can help area kids by serving as an evaluator in an academic program that builds confidence and critical thinking ability.
The Capital Area Speech & Debate League serves middle grade students in the greater Lansing area. The judge's role in speech and debate activities is the most vital to student learning. We host approximately 6 tournaments during each school year and need engaged and thoughtful judges to make the tournaments work and help kids improve their skills. It is possible to a whole day or just a round or two.
Judges watch individual performances and/or debates on a variety of topics. Along with encouragement and attentiveness, judges provide written and oral feedback to the students that they can use to improve their abilities for future performances
It is important that judges are briefed on the rules of the activities and that they are capable of providing oral and written feedback to students. Training and background checks will be provided. Volunteers should not have criminal records.
Nov 14: Debate; 10:30am-4pm
Dec 12: Literary Performance, Improv.
