This fan is such a good memory from the 1992 Opening Day, a tribute to an icon broadcasting Detroit Tigers games.

There’s a neat backstory. Apparently, when Harwell was temporarily removed as the main voice of Tiger baseball, there was a protest movement (maybe backed by the local radio station?) to reinstate Harwell, which he was—deservedly.

As you can see from the photos, the fan measures 13 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches (ear-to-ear) and is made from a light cardboard stock.
There’s faint stain on the back (exaggerated by the photos), but it might have happened in printing because the cardboard is perfectly flat.

The front of the fan seems like the ideal picture of Harwell, who usually seemed to be smiling. The colors and detail are bold.

The fan was a promotional item handed out to folds, sponsored by Q 95 FM. I don’t think the station is around any more, but I do remember listening to Dick Purtan on that station back in the day.

The back of the fan has some interesting details as well calling Harwell, the TRUE voice of baseball.

What stands out to me seem to be the perfect Bible verse for Opening Day, coming from Song of Solomon 2:11. Being a deeply religious man, Harwell certainly had a hand in that choice.

I’m sure that not many of these fans survived in good shape because even though it’s made of light cardboard stock, it still could easily be bent or roughed up. Luckily, the original owner from 32 years ago tucked it away safely (and flat).

I’ve put the fan in a heavy-duty, UV resistant, polypropylene sleeve to continue keeping its great shape.
