Civil Defense actually began in WW I. At first, civilian volunteers had several roles: being vigilant for potential threats at home; helping with recruiting; assisting in Liberty Bond drives; and helping maintain morale during the Great War.
After the Pearl Harbor bombing to start WW II, Civil Defense emerged again and helped with rationing.
The Cold War starting in the early 50s is when Civil Defense became even more active, being ready to help citizens in case of nuclear attack.
This original photo shows a man wearing what looks like an Air Warden helmet, which was worn primarily beginning in 1941 through the end of WW II in 1945. This man’s job was to clear the streets when necessary; prevent panic; get citizens to a safe place when needed; and get necessary aid. This guy looks up to the task.
The man is walking briskly and proudly, tie flopping in the wind. I’m not sure what the guy behind him is thinking. Camera-shy maybe?
This original photo measures 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. The name “Ray Lambertson” is written on the back.
I purchased this photo from an estate in western Michigan, and I’m guessing that the photo takes place in Grand Rapids.
As you can see, the photo is in pretty good shape.
